Veterans killed in car-train collision

Posted on November 16th, 2012 No Comments

A fatal train-car collision in Midland, Texas killed four military veterans and injured 17 others and their family members Thursday afternoon when a Union Pacific train hit the parade float they were riding on. Two trucks carrying more than two dozen veterans and their family members were taking them to an honorary banquet when the tragic accident occurred.

Two veterans were pronounced dead at the scene and two more died at a local hospital, the New York Times reports. Two of the deceased sacrificed their lives to push their wives to safety and did not have enough time to jump from the float. One of the injured is still in critical condition at Midland Memorial and one is listed in serious condition in Lubbock. Four are listed in stable condition, and 11 have been treated and released.

Many witnesses are looking for answers as to how this accident occurred. Some say they never saw the safety gates go down before the train collided with the truck; however, Union Pacific officials say the safety devices were working properly at the time of the crash. The noise, loud music, and horns from parade vehicles may have drowned out the sound of the approaching train.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died in this tragic accident.
