U.S. government reaches settlement with widow

Posted on November 1st, 2011 No Comments

The U.S. government has agreed to pay an undisclosed amount to the widow of a man who died during the anthrax attacks in 2001. When she filed the wrongful death lawsuit in 2003, she was demanding $50 million in damages.

Five people were killed and seventeen fell seriously ill ten years ago when anthrax-laced letters were sent to large media outlets and U.S. senators. Her husband was the first causality; he died after being exposed to the disease in a letter that was sent to the publishing office of the National Enquirer where he worked as a tabloid photo editor.

The widow claims the government is in part to blame for her husband’s death because it failed to safely secure the anthrax disease at a military laboratory. The FBI believes that an Army scientist, with access to the disease, was behind the attacks.
