A 32-year-old police officer with the Springfield Police Department was released from the hospital last week after suffering a paralyzing spinal cord injury when he was hit by a drunk driver in March.

On March 31, the officer had been on duty when he his vehicle was hit by a car driven by a 34-year-old man. The 34-year-old man had a blood-alcohol content of 0.289 percent at the time of the accident. The officer suffered a broken arm and a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the legs down.

The officer was in the hospital for 106 days while recovering from his injuries. He has now regained some movement in his legs but will still be undergoing intensive therapy several times a week.
