Ohio Slip and Fall Accidents on the Rise

Posted on October 24th, 2012 No Comments

In 2009, hospital-related falls cost residents in Ohio nearly $645 million with 63 percent of the falls resulting in hip fractures and another 26 percent resulting in brain injuries.

To make matters worse, the risk of falling increases tremendously as people age, especially once they reach the age 75.  According to data given by officials with the Ohio Department of Health, the leading cause of hospitalization, ER visits and death among elderly in Ohio, is fall injuries.

In the group of Ohioans that are 65 and older, 964 people died from falls and over 100,000 required a doctor visit for their injuries. In the last decade alone, the number of fatal falls has increased 163 percent for this age group. It was also stated that the women are two times more likely to suffer an injury from a fall than men in the same age group.

Researchers are trying to find a reason for the increase in falls and have linked one to the use of multiple medications at once. The mixing of prescriptions can cause impairment and dizziness.

They have stated that other factors may include lack of strength in their legs and back as well as reduced vision ability. A few ways to help reduce the risk of falling include: Have a doctor check your medications for side effects, get your vision checked, stay active, take care of your feet, remove hazards from walking areas and avoiding fast, rushed movements.
