Ohio Big Lots issues recall of bunk beds after child’s death

Posted on July 7th, 2011 No Comments

The Big Lots in Columbus, Ohio recently issued a recall of 30,000 of its bunk beds for being unsafe after a 3-year-old boy became trapped in the bed and suffocated to death.

The boy died in March 2010. He became trapped in the metal, futon-style bunk bed when the frame was lowered into a flat position. The weight of the futon was on the boy’s head and he was unable to breathe.

The recall was voluntary and in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The beds recalled include those sold in Big Lots stores all over the nation from January 2009 to April 2010.

Consumers have been advised to immediately stop their use of the bunk beds and contact a Big Lots store if they own one of the bunk beds.
