FDA Investigates Monster Energy Drinks After Linked to Five Fatal Heart Attacks

Posted on October 23rd, 2012 No Comments

The Food and Drug Administration is now investigating five deaths, as well as one non-fatal heart attack, that they believe may be linked to Monster Energy drinks.

The popular beverage has nearly 240 milligrams of caffeine, seven times more than the average 12-ounce soda. The allegations that the 24 ounce beverage is linked to death or injury dateĀ  back to to 2004.

The FDA announced that they would be investigating the reports shortly after a wrongful death lawsuit was filed in California by the parents of a 14-year-old girl that died after drinking two Monster Energy drinks in a 24 hour time period.

The family of the child is claiming that the makers of Monster Energy drinks did not properly warn consumers of the dangers associated with drinking the products. An autopsy was done on the child and it was found that her death was caused by a caffeine toxicity which lead to cardiac arrhythmia. A medical examiner also reported that the girl has an inherited condition that may cause her blood vessels to weaken.

The company that makes the energy drink, Monster Beverage Corporation, has not immediately responded to the investigation, but they announced last week that they do not know of any deaths that were caused by their product. The FDA has a limit on the amount of caffeine that can be in one soda, but there is not a cap the amount in energy drinks.
