Family awarded $6.5 million for anesthesia overdose

Posted on June 28th, 2011 No Comments

A couple was recently awarded $6.5 million after their 4-year-old son received an overdose of anesthesia during eyelid surgery and became mentally incapacitated.

A nurse, not an anesthesiologist, administered a large amount of halothane to the boy, which caused him to stop breathing for 15 minutes. According to the lawsuit, a doctor was not present when the boy stopped breathing and hospital staff reacted slowly. The boy was taken to another hospital’s emergency room, where he was revived. The boy’s brain lost so much oxygen that he became mentally impaired.

The family was awarded for past and future medical costs, as well as pain suffering during the ordeal.
