The Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at Cornell University was found guilty last week of providing alcohol to a minor and first-degree hazing after a 19 year-old pledge died after a hazing ritual last year.
As party of the ritual, the Brooklyn teenager was kidnapped by fraternity members, bound by the hands and feet, and forced to drink alcohol until he passed out. He never regained consciousness and was found with a blood alcohol level of 0.356 percent.
Since Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a corporation, the courts can only fine it and no members will serve time. The family of the teenager has filed a $25 million civil lawsuit against the frat for wrongful death, Reuters reports.
