Charges Filed in Fatal Bicycle Accident

Posted on October 31st, 2012 No Comments

Bicycles are a popular form of transportation across the United States. When bicyclists share the road with motor vehicles, accidents can easily unfold. Drivers may act recklessly and attempt to cut off bicyclists, thus creating an opportunity for a fatal accident. When a collision between a motor vehicle and a bicycle takes place, the bicyclist is at risk of suffering serious injuries.

The importance of safely sharing the roadway with bicycles was recently exemplified in a fatal bicycle accident near Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. A 27-year-old bicyclist was riding his bike on Wilmer Avenue on August 26 when he was fatally struck by a motor vehicle. The driver of the motor vehicle, a 50-year-old man, was accused of failing to maintain the proper distance between his vehicle and the bicyclist while on the roadway.

The driver did not follow the rules of the road, and as a result he struck the bicycle with his vehicle. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and the driver was arrested. The man was charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Both of the charges that were filed against him are classified as misdemeanors. He is expected to appear in court today.
