Death at Sea

Sailing is a luxury enjoyed by many; however, when it becomes your occupation, romantic ideas about it may begin to fade. Being out on the sea for long periods of time increases your chances of getting involved in a maritime accident or injury. In the event of a wrongful or negligent act in international waters, the Death on the High Seas Act of 1920 provides compensation for the family members of the deceased.

If a member of your family has passed away while out at sea, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your loss. Contact the Cincinnati wrongful death attorneys at Stepleton Dugan, LLC today to discuss the details of your case. Call 513-321-7733 to schedule a free initial consultation.

Death on the High Seas Act

The original Death on the High Seas Act was written in 1920; however, it was amended after the TWA 800 crash in 1996 to extend coverage to more family members and to expand the scope of damages. Currently, the victim’s spouse, children, parents, and other financially dependent relatives may recover monetary losses.

However, in order to receive compensation for wrongful death, the victim must have passed away on international waters. By definition, this means any sea or ocean 12 miles off the shore of any state, territory, or dependent of the United States.
