CooperVision Inc. has recently expanded its contact lens recall to Avaria Toric and now Avaria Sphere. 4.9 million lenses are subject to recall after tests revealed silicone oil residue that did not meet its quality of standards.
The Food and Drug Administration has listed the recall under Class I, the most severe recall classification. Class I recall products can cause serious adverse health effects and even death. Dozens of Avaria contact wearers complained of hazy vision and pain, but some suffered torn corneas that demanded medical attention.
CooperVision Inc. estimates spending $23.2 million on the recall. Many have criticized the company for not widely publicizing the recall.
