43 dead in Russian plane crash

Posted on September 9th, 2011 No Comments

43 people were killed on Wednesday after their plane flew into a signal tower shortly after take off. On board were 45 hockey players and coaches for the Kontinental Hockey League; they were on their way to play the first game of the season in Belarus. Only two survived the crash, a hockey player and a plane engineer who are both in serious condition.

The cause for the accident is still under investigation. Before the crash the pilot reported having trouble gaining altitude. Airport personnel say the plane did not reach appropriate speeds before take off, which contributed to its low altitude. Investigators are trying to determine if the crash was a result of human error.

Our deepest sympathies are with the friends and families of the victims in the plane accident.
