$20.5 Million Awarded in Pennsylvania Lawsuit

Posted on November 29th, 1999 No Comments

A jury in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania awarded a family $20.5 million in a medical malpractice case earlier this week.

The lawsuit was brought due to severe birth injuries that affected the son of the plaintiffs.  The child, who is 7-years-old now, suffers from cerebral palsy, other neurological disorders, is nearly blind, and is mentally retarded due to errors that took place the day of his birth.

His mother went to the hospital the day he was born because she believed that there was something wrong with her unborn son.  While she was attended to by nurses, she did not see an obstetrician for nearly two hours, during which time her child received very little oxygen.  Additionally, when an obstetrician did attend to her, he decided to induce labor, which resulted in further complications.
